Counting in Style: Mastering Numbers 1 to 100 in Words

Numbers are everywhere! From counting cookies to calculating your age, understanding numbers is a key life skill. But sometimes, those numerals can seem a little intimidating. This blog is here to help with a fundamental step: learning how to write numbers 1 to 100 in words.

Why Write Numbers in Words?

While numerals are efficient, writing numbers in words offers several benefits:

  • Clarity: Especially when dealing with large numbers, written words can improve readability and avoid confusion.
  • Formal Writing: In academic papers, business documents, or even formal invitations, writing numbers in words is often the preferred style.
  • Vocabulary Building: Learning number names expands your vocabulary and strengthens your grasp of language.

1 to 100 In Words

Conquering Numbers 1 to 9

We’ll start with the building blocks: numbers 1 to 9. These are the foundation for writing all numbers up to 100.

  • One
  • Two
  • Three
  • Four
  • Five
  • Six
  • Seven
  • Eight
  • Nine

Teens: A Twist on Tens

Numbers from 11 to 19 follow a slightly different pattern. Instead of two separate words, we combine “teen” with the number from 1 to 9.

  • Eleven
  • Twelve
  • Thirteen
  • Fourteen
  • Fifteen
  • Sixteen
  • Seventeen
  • Eighteen
  • Nineteen

Reaching New Heights: Tens Come into Play

Now we enter the world of tens! Here, we use the base words “twenty,” “thirty,” “forty,” and so on, followed by a hyphen and the number from 1 to 9 (just like we did for teens).

  • Twenty
  • Thirty
  • Forty
  • Fifty
  • Sixty
  • Seventy
  • Eighty
  • Ninety

Bonus Tip: For the number 10, it’s simply written as “ten.”

Combining Tens and Ones: Writing Numbers from 21 to 99

Ready to write bigger numbers? We combine the tens place (from twenty to ninety) with the ones place (from one to nine) using a hyphen.

For example:

  • Thirty-one
  • Forty-two
  • Fifty-three
  • Sixty-four (and so on)

What about zero? If the ones place is zero, you can simply say “twenty” instead of “twenty-zero.”

The Grand Finale: The Hundreds

We’ve almost reached 100! Numbers from 100 to 999 follow a similar pattern, but we introduce the word “hundred.”

  • One hundred (for 100)
  • One hundred one (for 101)
  • One hundred two (for 102) (and so on)

Here’s a trick: For numbers between 100 and 199, you can also write them out as “a hundred” followed by the teens (e.g., “a hundred eleven” for 111).

Practice Makes Perfect!

Now that you’re armed with this knowledge, it’s time to practice! There are many resources available online and in workbooks to help you solidify your understanding of writing numbers 1 to 100 in words.
